Abstract

The 19th century in Brazil was marked by debates and laws that discussed the end of the servile element. After the promulgation of the Free Womb Law,  other laws pressed for the end of slavery, and one of them was the Sexagenarian Law. The article aims to understand the classification of the enslaved people between 60 and 65 years old in the city of Teresina. The political struggle between abolitionists and slavers pushed for the creation of the law in the year 1885, in which the liberation of the enslaved would occur slowly and gradually and not immediately as the abolitionists wanted. The research was carried out through bibliographical discussions such as: Emilia Viotti (1999), Joseli Mendonça (1999), Roberto Saba (2008), Mary Karash (2000), Edward Thompson (1987). The documental research was developed in the Public Archive of the State of Piauí, list of slaves over 60 years old and the registration of the slaves who benefited from the emancipation fund.
