Abstract

The study by Lieutenant Rufino Luiz Tavares on the Tapajós River, published in 1875, is the main analysis document in this article. In this aspect, we will focus on understanding the relationship between the discourse built around the way of life of the cabocla and indigenous population that occupied the Amazonian sertões and the strategies presented as necessary to promote the economic development of the region. We will seek to demonstrate that the study of Lieutenant Rufino Tavares is involved in a context in which it seeks to know the different regions of the country with the purpose of exercising greater control of the imperial government. The understanding is that it was not a state that asserted itself only by the use of military forces, but that took government authority to the interior of the provinces of Pará and Amazonas, through actions covered by a speech of promotion of order, development of the commerce, industry, promotion of modernity and civilization.
