Abstract

This paper analyses properties requests written by three women from Espírito Santo. We recurred to historic sources from Agriculture, Commerce and Public Ministry. Feminine gender people wrote one third of the property requests from this province. Nevertheless, we did not find any woman trying to buy properties in other parts of the Brazilian Empire. We found social and gender inequalities in the government evaluation of those requests from that patriarchal society. There were obstacles to women, even more for some social groups, acquire properties from the Imperial State. However, they acted consciously in order of expanding their territory.
