Abstract

Bearing in mind the scarcity of studies about this important region for popular culture in the Northeastern brazilian hinterland, this article intends to contribute to the research on the history of the municipality São José do Egito, located in the Alto Sertão do Pajeú is known as the Immortal Cradle of Poetry. In this sense, we will initially present relevant geographic and cultural aspects of the micro-region of Alto Sertão do Pajeú and the Municipality of São José do Egito, in which historical elements related to Vila de Flores do Pajeú, seat of the Comarca do Sertão in the 19th century, will be highlighted below, to Vila de Ingazeira, motherland of Alto Sertão do Pajeú, and finally to Vila de São José das Queimadas, which became Vila de São José da Ingazeira and currently the Municipality of São José do Egito.
