Abstract

This article proposes the study of land conflicts between landowners and indigenous groups from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. Therefore, we will analyze the relationship between the landowner Antonio Joaquim Malheiros and the Kadiwéus indigenous people, in the then southern region of Mato Grosso (currently Mato Grosso do Sul), also examining the usufruct of indigenous labor, including allegations of abuse and poor working conditions. The research intends to reveal, in dialogues with other authors, the importance of observing that, in relation to the studies of indigenous groups, the binomial land and work must be understood together throughout the 1800s.
