Abstract

In our article we defend the idea that the colonization/occupation of the lands of the captaincy of Ceará Grande was directly linked to the Pernambucana Insurrection (1645 - 1654) and the War of the Barbarians (1650 - 1720). It would have been from these conflicts that the "Brazilians" (militias and flags) would have broken out from the hinterlands (mainly on the banks of the Jaguaribe and Serra dos Cariris Novos), eliminating/subduing the native peoples and submitting them to the yoke of the Portuguese monarchy and occupying the interior lands of the captaincy of Ceará Grande. Finally, we present the transition process of the last tapuias of the Ceará Grande hinterlands – cariris, tremembés, canindés, tabajaras, icós, etc. – for the condition of goats and caboclos, Christian subjects of the Portuguese monarchy in America.
