SCENARIOS OF THE FANTASTIC IN THE CREATION OF THE INEXPLICABLE IN “THE EXORCIST”, BY WILLIAM PETER BLATTY

The study's theme is fantastic literature in its theoretical bases and in its occurrences in horror novels, with the aim of analyzing textual elements present in The Exorcist (1971), by William Peter Blatty (1928-2017), which produce the effects of fear and other disconcerting feelings in the reader and make it possible to identify the work's belonging to the fantastic genre. Thus constituted, the work bases the discussion of fantastic elements on the theories of Tzvetan Todorov (1975), David Roas (2014) and H. P. Lovecraft (1987), following a methodology that is characterized as applied in terms of its nature, descriptive in terms of its objective study, bibliographic and documentary regarding technical procedures and qualitative regarding its approach. In this way, by identifying passages indicative of the theme in the narrative, there is a sequence of intriguing events that becomes more complex as the plot progresses. Also, the author's aesthetic strategies are unique when describing and constructing scenes, locations and behaviors by protagonist Regan MacNeil. The analysis process allowed us to understand that fantastic literature brings the reader closer to contexts that go beyond the limits of reality and imagination, defying the laws of the real world, in order to configure the supernatural and the unknown.
