Abstract

This present work is a bibliographic and theoretic research about the books En finir avec Eddy Belleguele and Histoire de la Violence, written by Édouard Louis. We used the Brazilian edition of these works published by Planeta do Brasil and translated from French to English by Francesca Angiolillo: O Fim de Eddy (2018) and História da Violência (2020). To discuss identities and representation matters, we used Edward W. Said and his work Orientalism (2007) and Homi K. Bhabha and his The Location of Culture (2004). Finally, we also used Lynn Mário T. Menezes de Souza’s (1996) study on the relationship between history and literature, through the post-colonial lens, as well as a short overview of the current French society gathered through news and articles. By the end of this survey, it was possible to illustrate how the figure of the Arabic man is portrayed in Louis’ narratives and how they meet contemporary French opinion.

Author Biography

Rodrigo Matos da Silva Gonçalves, Federal University of Sergipe

He’s Master's student in Literature - Literary Studies in the field of Comparative Literature in the Postgraduate Program in Literature (PPGL) at the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS), he is graduated in Literature - Portuguese and English - Full Degree at UFS and he’s a specialist in Translation and Proofreading of English Texts by FACUMINAS (MG). Currently, his researches are in the field of autofiction, focusing on that produced by the author Édouard Louis. Between 2020 and 2021, he was a voluntary researcher in the Scientific Initiation Program, in the project 'Literary narratives by Afro-descendant writers in Portuguese and English.
